Portuguese Playing Cards
These lovely cards are made by local artist Sara Smith! While in an artist residency in Portugal she was captivated by the flora and fauna of the Alentejo region. There was a pig farm not far away and she found herself completely charmed by the young pigs. She made numerous block prints of the pigs and then branched out into making a full deck of cards incorporating the animals and crops of the Alentejo. The traditional suits: hearts, clubs, diamonds, and spades became wheat, olives, grapes, and cork acorns. The king became a pig, the queen a stork, the jack a goat and a donkey is the joker.
