The Very Large Array, aka the VLA is an amazing site to see in its enormity. Driving west from Socorro through the barren desert, you suddenly see an odd line of metal structures in the distance. As you get closer the discs become larger and larger until you are right underneath an enormous array of telescopes placed in a Y-shaped pattern spreading across the horizon. The extraordinary size of this observatory is quite overwhelming! The VLA is situated 50 miles West of Socorro, New Mexico on the Plains of San Augustin. There is a method to the madness to this astronomical radio observatory. Each massive telescope is on railroad tracks in order to be moved into various configurations throughout the year, to observe radio galaxies, pulsars, supernova remnants and gamma-ray bursts. Remember Jodie Foster in the movie Contact, in which she detected alien signals? That was the VLA! Our super soft flour sack dish towel with The Very Large Array hand printed on it, may just be the most unique dish towel in existence!
